Kharazi's wife was killed in the strike. Iranian officials said Kharazi was overseeing engagement with Pakistan for a possible meeting between Iranian officials and U.S. Vice President JD Vance. The officials said the targeting of Kharazi is being viewed as an attempt to derail diplomacy.
